In the Tales from the River project volunteers have collected 30 oral history interviews from across the Brecks and fen edge and spanning ten decades. Local people told us their memories of recreation and lives by the rivers and other waterways. (See the approximate main locations on a Google Map.)
We will be placing the audio and the transcripts of all of these interviews on the website during 2025.
See the Index for all interviews to listen on SoundCloud and to download the transcripts. These are on three geographically organised pages: the Wissey and Stanta areas; along the Little Ouse, Lakenheath and Honington/Sapiston; and the river Lark.
All will also be available on one page (but it might be slow to load).
Download a list of the 30 interviewees (PDF one page, including year of birth and main place mentioned.
These – along with written stories and other material donated to the project (including the Thetford study of bathing)– have allowed us to tell the story of the Brecks rivers and how people interacted with them. Their stories have been told in the online talk and other talks, guided walks and the display panels.
